Fertility issues can really take their toll on the emotional resilience of a couple. It can be so stressful waiting each month only to be greeted with disappointment and frustration. For some couples the months just keep passing and the positivity begins to wane and a feeling of despondency creeps in. How do you manage to cope through these times? How do you manage to get up in the morning and carry on?
I meet many couples through Bristol Fertility Support Group who are struggling with these very same feelings. Here are a few of the ways that they have managed to cope whilst riding 'The Emotional Rollercoaster'
One thing that has made a big difference is taking up any free specialist counselling that is offered by your fertility clinic. This has been really useful for many people - a safe place where you can offload and begin to work through some of those more uncomfortable emotions that may be interfering with your every day life.
Next look out for a local support group - web based groups are good but there is something about meeting with people face to face - it is a better connection. Our group is more of a facilitated group - it is about people connecting and talking to each other about their experiences - it is amazing how much people light up when they are able to talk to others who understand what they are going through.
Find something that you and your partner are interested in - something that you can do together that isn't about Fertility treatment - perhaps something that you used to do?
My top tip is Walking because it is cheap, easy and super beneficial for your health! Go and explore and have a mini adventure or two :)
Mindfulness apps like Headspace can help you find your way into mindfulness in bite-size segments so that you don't have to go full on Zen! Or try a relaxation recording - if you contact me I will send you a link to mine.
It can be difficult to feel much like socialising - we are very social animals and social interactions bring benefits - isolation brings none of these benefits so even if it just your local support group try to keep connected.
I am not suggesting that you put yourself into uncomfortable situations where you feel terrible!
